Ooh la la! Polyvore

Posted in Ooh la la! with tags , , on April 13, 2009 by couturecherie

One of the reasons why I love fashion so much is styling. Exploring fabrics, textures, and colours to achieve different looks gets me all kinds of excited. Unfortunately, I’m merely a student. I’m limited in what I can do because:

  1. I have limited access to fabrics. As a student, I don’t have the luxury of speding £200 per metre. *thumbs down*
  2. My instructors want our designs to be “conceptual”. Not in the good way, but the not very wearable way. I get into arguements about this every other day.
  3. This idea of conceptualism makes it virtually impossible to imagine outfits being worn off the runway. How am i supposed to make a living?!

So I usually have to find other ways to express my commercial side. Sketching simple outfits, messing with my own wardrobe, picking outfits for friends. It makes me wish I had unlimited access to all designers items, all the time, whenever I want. And then Polyvore came along.

I was chatting with one of my friends online, when she started harassing me about trying out this website (www.polyvore.com) she had found. She, like me, is a student and suffers from the limitations above. She went on and on about how addicting/amazing it was. Judging by her level of excitement, I figured it must be worth a shot. I reluctantly opened a new tab, typed in the adress, and waited for the page to load. Upon first laying eyes on it, the site looked rather simple and unexciting. It featured “sets” that looked like they were pulled out of magazines. I put my disapproving face on, but signed up regardless and prepared myself to be disappointed. Then I discovered what made the site tick. It has a library of thousands of images, from backgrounds, to jewelry, to wedding gowns, all at your dispossal! You can create any kind of collage your heart desires. I was blown away. I thought I’d test said library by searching for items I thought they wouldn’t have (Limited edition Christian Louboutin shoes, for example). Turns out it was there! I jumped for joy, quite literally, and did a little dance. I spent a couple of hours exploring the contents, grinning like a Cheshire cat and even made my first set (they use this term to refer to collages).

It’s the one of the most addictive sites I’ve come across lately. If art, fashion, or interiors is your thing, then give it a try! You will not be disappointed. If you are, I grant permission to yell at me.

Chocolatey annoyance.

First of all, HAPPY EASTER! 😀 (aka eat-as-much-chocolate-as-you-can day!). I’ve spent the day eating the remaning chocolate from my trip to Bruges. It’s the most relaxing city ever! Not to mention the food is ridiculously delish. I spent three days exploring the major Belgian food groups, which consis of  chocolate, frites, beer, more chocolate, mussels, and chocolate. I have no idea how Belgian women, much like the French, are model perfect! Anyway, digress a lot.

So I’m sitting here immersed in my world of chocolatey goodness, when I decide to do some reasearch for my design class. I figure I’m going to sit here for a while, so I might as well be useful. I asked myself “CC, what’s the easiest thing to find online that would relate to your research?”. Let’s see: fashion design images….PICTURES! And better yet 1950s pictures!  I headed for Google images immediately, typed in “1950s fashion photography” and got…nothing. How could this be?! I tried about 5 different variations, searching for 2 hours, and still got nothing I could use. Not a single thing. Absolutamente nada. I came to the conclusion that the world is out to get me, gave up, and resumed my chocolate eating.

And now I am annoyed. I try to do the right thing FOR ONCE, and I failed! Epically. To add insult to injury, I can’t even enjoy my chocolate anymore! Stupid summer outfit guilt…

Ooh la la! Half moon manicures.

Posted in Ooh la la! with tags , on April 10, 2009 by couturecherie

I am quite possibly the girliest girl you’ll ever meet. I’m always looking for new beauty things to try. New colours and make up looks, hairstyles; You name it, I’ve probably tried it. Lately, I’ve been obsessed with anything glamorous/vixenish. It’s feminine, , and hot!

My latest discovery is the half moon manicure. Dita Von Teese (whose style is insanely flawless) has claimed it as her signature manicure. It has to a tendency to resurface on catwalks every year or so, especially in the fall. Dior recreated it flawlessly in the Fall 2007 ready-to-wear show. This sassy manicure comes straight out of the 1940s, when women used to paint their nails blood-red, leaving a naked half moon and adding a thin silver line on the tip. Simply gorgeous!

This style works best with oval or round shaped nails. You can try mixing up the colours to match your taste. I personally prefer a pearly white half moon with any shade of red polish. Skipping the silver line is recommended for shorter nails, as it makes them look oddly chopped off.

Anyway, for those ladies looking for a feminine, yet playful/quirky look, this is definitely one to try. I will not be going back to painting my nails the “normal” way any time soon!

Jeudi à la mode: Wet look leggings

Posted in Jeudi à la mode with tags , , on April 9, 2009 by couturecherie

Oh, leggings. Those uber-comfortable pieces of stretchy fabric that facilitate getting dressed on lazy days. Apparently 95% of the population between the ages of 13-30 are lazy as hell everyday, since leggings are everywheeeere! However, as comfortable/convenient as they may seem, they are evil little articles of clothing. They cling to every single curve and “imperfection”, making the thinnest of stick insects feel like Shamu. Not only can they be highly unflattering, but can look dreadful if not worn properly (I’m looking at you, people who insist on wearing cropped leggings with skirts/shorts. No!)

So as if leggings weren’t already tricky business, some genius decided it would be a fantastic idea TO MAKE THEM SHINY! Yes, go ahead and grab PVC/leather/plastic (might as well use cling wrap or a garbage bag) and let’s make it fit as tight as possible! Great idea. The result is the trend from hell; the so-called “wet look” leggings.

Trend from deepest level of hell!

Trend from deepest level of hell!

Now, I don’t know if this trend has made it’s way to the USA, but it sure has taken London by storm! Women are either cursing themselves for not having the fashion credentials this look requires, or not giving a toss and wearing them regardless. There’s a select few who actually are doing it pretty well. Why? Because there is a correct way of taming the wet look legging beast, of course!

Firstly, do not wear anything that does not cover your legging-encased bottom, EVER! (Unless the size of said leggings is 00, in which case I recommend a burger…or two). That being said, flowing tops/dresses work beautifully with this look, as the contrast provides softness. I’ve seen a few girls wear tight fitting dresses isntead, but honestly this can only be done by people with unprecedented levels of fierceness (Yes, I said it), thefore I do not recommend it. For those who prefer a more casual approach, a belted oversize t-shirt and footwear of choice (except for trainers. No!) should get the job done.

So there you have it. Another ass kicking (and not in the good way) trend. I still haven’t decided if absolutely hate it or absolutely love it, but I’m leaning more towards the former. Not to mention, I’m don’t think I’m brave enough to try it myself. At the end of the day, it’s all about personal style and having fun with it, but one has to wonder: how many fashion curveballs are we going to have to endure?

And the winners are…

Posted in Jeudi à la mode, Miscellaneous, Ooh la la!, RSVP, Runway Rundown with tags on April 7, 2009 by couturecherie

Decisions, decisions! I previously mentioned I would create a few categories for the blog. It appears that labelling fashion-related things isn’t a particularly easy task, as I’m having quite a difficult time narrowing things down.

I asked myself “CC, why do people like fashion? What are people drawn to?”. This is a condensed list of what I came up with:

  • Celebrities. Who’s going where? With who? What are they wearing? Etc.
  • Style. Too difficut to explain in one sentence.
  • Trends. What’s “in”? What’s coming up? You get the idea.
  • “It” items. Gimme!
  • Events. Fashion shows, parties, launches, prom0tions.

It worked out pretty nicely, if I may say so myself. It is, however, extremely boring. Can you imagine? “Category 1: Celebrities”. Le yawn!  I’m not very fond of the ordinary, so this needs a little spiffing up.

Voilà! Les catégories!

  • Ooh la la!. The things that I’m loving.
  • Runway Rundown. Self explanatory, non?
  • RSVP. Events, I has them.
  • Jeudi à la mode. Thursday shall be known as “trend day”
  • Miscellaneous. Because I tend to be random.

I can’t wait to get (properly) started! Let’s hope I actually stick to these…

All-nighters suck

Posted in Uncategorized with tags on April 6, 2009 by couturecherie

I always forget the extent of suckage that all-nighters posses until I have to pull one (yet again). This time it was probably my fault for procrastinating, so I’m hating myself a little. Having classes from 8:30am to 6:30pm doesn’t help much either. So forgive me for my lack of coherent blog…and thoughts. Oops. *snore*
